SU project

For the first part of the year, the whole class had to work together to recreate the SU building in a 3D environment game space. At first we all thought that it's quite enthusiastic and we probably wouldn't be able to make it, so it was quite scary to start. We gathered together and we were assigned roles. Everyone had a choice of what they wanted to do with this project and things they wanted to avoid doing. At this point I really had no idea what I wanted to do for myself. I just said "Give me work and I'll do it." I didn't feel that I was strong in any of the areas, I mainly drew and did concepts and none of those were required for this project. I felt quite helpless as my 3D was really weak at this point.

In the end I was assigned on textures. I was alright with that, it was Photoshop work, that's something I can do. So my job was to wait for the others to model assets so they could pass them on to me to texture. While doing that I helped a bit with measuring some of the objects in the SU and discussing gameplay ideas with Paul. But soon I was out of work.

We used Trello for the first time and we had a huge list of assets to be made, all documented with reference photos and measurements which was really useful. Any of us could take an object, assign our name to it and work. I was a bit scared to do that at first, I didn't want to mess up with the modelling so as a start, I just took a lot of small, box-shaped objects and did the textures for them, all on one texture map. I had the majority of them done when I was scolded for doing them in the first place because they were such small objects and weren't important. My excuse was that I had no other work so it was better to be at least doing something and I wasn't on the modelling team anyway, so.... It was practice as well. For this project we had to use 3DSMax and I needed some time to get back into using it after my switch to Maya last year. I had to remember all about the modifiers, the different ways to make UVs and all the other things. Surprisingly I handled it quite well. It was interesting to be using Max for this while still working with Maya on the World Building tasks.

Since there were not many box-objects left and I felt bad for doing them in the first place, I decided to at least try and do something a bit more complicated. Something like the TV. Funny it's such a simple object actually, but I was still scared. And after that went alright, I slowly started to get the courage to do more and more complex object.

I was also given a lot of objects to UV and texture and I actually found out that I quite enjoyed doing than. By the end of the this project I realized that texturing is something I could easily specialize in and it was something I wanted to continue working on.

Here is a list of everything I did (Taken from Trello, in no particular order):
